La Motte Museum is hosting Threads of Synergy an exhibition of South African tapestry art at La Motte Wine Estate, and Museum Curator, Elzette de Beer, provides the fascinating background to this wonderfully tactile experience on the Sanlam Arts Round Up on Fine Music Radio -101.3fm.
Threads of Synergy Exhibition
In a world where disembodied virtual experiences have become the order of the day, Threads of Synergy – a new exhibition of South African tapestry art in the La Motte Pierneef Museum – encourages a tactile encounter and pays homage to the artisans’ presence in the process of making.
Threads of Synergy presents a selection of tapestries by the South African artists William Kentridge, Sam Nhlengethwa (see photo above), Cecily Sash and Cecil Skotnes, all woven in the Stephens Tapestry Studio. These large-scale tapestries (some measuring three to four metres each) reveal the very essence of creative collaboration between artists, designers and weavers. Their co-created tapestries are eventually exhibited in galleries and museums worldwide. The exhibition is subsequently based on weaving as an art form – from spinning and dyeing the mohair, redrawing the artwork designs for tapestry and charting the colours, to the weaving process itself, as further explained here.
