“In the spirit of fostering unity and providing a creative outlet for our pride as Capetonians, we are pleased to announce the first annual Cape Town Lantern Parade. Join us as we illuminate Sea Point Promenade with handcrafted lanterns and celebrate the bright, festive spirit of our city” – a welcome invitation to start the new year!
Conceptualised by its about youTM, a Cape Town-based digital agency, the Cape Town Lantern Parade is a community event that only allows paper lanterns that are eco-friendly, recyclable and use LED lights as an illumination source. Sky lanterns, which are illuminated using a candle or fuel cell that allows them to rise like hot air balloons, pose a massive risk to animals and the environment, and will not be allowed.
WHEN & WHERE: The parade takes place on Saturday, 11 January 2020, starting at 19:00 at the Sea Point Pavilion Swimming Pool on Lower Beach Road and continues, in one direction only, with no stops, along the Promenade ending at Mouille Point Beach on Beach Road. The parade route is approximately 3km.
The Cape Town Lantern Parade Line-up begins at 19:00 when the lanterns will be judged in the following three categories:
1. Best Individual Lantern
2. Best Group Lantern
3. Most Creative Lantern
The winners of each category secure the honour of heading the parade walk, which will begin at 20:00.
Participation in the parade is free but conditional upon an individual or group bringing a handcrafted lantern that fits the criteria. Those who wish to watch the parade are welcome to bring a chair along and enjoy the parade from the sidelines, but will not be allowed to obstruct the parade path.
The Cape Town Lantern Parade is a festive, family-friendly opportunity to join together and celebrate our colourful, creative individuality as Capetonians.
