Protect the West Coast is delighted to offer 30 beautiful limited-edition screen prints by Award-winning South African artist Balekane Legoabe, inspired by ancient rock art and the ocean, titled Diagrams of the Beginning, to raise funds for Protect the West Coast.
Balekane Legoabe is an award-winning young South African artist who recently completed a residency at the 50ty/50ty Prints fine art studio in Cape Town, which resulted in Diagrams of the Beginning, a limited edition of 30 hand-pulled screen prints inspired by ancient rock art and cultural and ocean mythologies.
Legoabe and 50ty/50ty Prints have made these collector’s art pieces available for sale, with a portion of proceeds going to PTWC.
During her recent residency at 50ty/50ty Prints, Balekane was inspired by winners of the 2024 Underwater Photographer of the Year and their exquisite and sobering depictions of human impact on the ethereal beauty of the ocean, and the visual essay The Moon as Shoe, a fascinating compilation of 19th century San drawings.
Balekane created numerous gestural ink drawings of creatures and forms, which were cut up and rearranged into a new composition. This composite image was applied to three screens at three different exposures, each printed as a different opacity of red ochre, which resulted in a poetic overlap of earth, ocean and the inevitable mark of man.
The collection depicts the magical stretch of earth between the Orange River and Cape Columbine – the South African West Coast. In particular, it underlines the mythical and historical connection to the indigenous San peoples, and the threat illegal mining poses to this fragile natural and cultural heritage.
“Thirty percent of proceeds from each sale will be donated to the conservation NPO Protect the West Coast’s important cause,” says 50ty/50ty’s Jeanne Legrand. “Their vision resonates with Balekane’s themes – and with this artwork in particular – so the partnership just makes sense.”
