The promise was that three of South Africa’s brightest international opera stars would sing in a concert performance of Donizetti’s masterpiece Lucia di Lammermoor. And at last night’s performance – one of only two and both fully booked out – the stellar cast delivered in trumps. This was a triumph for Cape Town and truly a musical experience of a lifetime.
Pretty Yende, received 3 toatally deserved mid concert standing ovations and another after her duet with Colin Lee. And Artscape resounded to catcalls and screams of brava when the amazing cast took their final bow with conductor Richard Bonynge, the Cape Philharmonic Orchestra and the Voice of the Nation.
Queue for any uncollected tickets on Saturday night or pay whatever a scalper might ask!
The spectacular evening also needs to be seen as a tribute to the Cape Town Opera School, the Opera Training Programme and the many dedicated people who invest in providing this city and the nation with opportunities to grow local talent and provide a a platform to celebrate the arts. Bravo to all.
