Making Space – the solo exhibition by photographer Nicole Clare Fraser at DAOR Contemporary is the focus of today’s Sanlam Arts Round Up on Fine Music Radio. Nicole and Kerry Red, DAOR Director, walk us through the exhibition.
Listen to the Sanlam Arts Round Up on Fine Music Radio FMR 101.3fm every Friday at 17h30
Nicole takes us through her process as a photographer, which is very tactile and hands on – it’s a matter of making and not simply taking the photograph. What she wants to do is capture spaces that are empty and devoid of people – “a quiet moment”. She is presenting public spaces out of context, which is explained in the full title of the exhibition “Making Space: Photographic Traces of Absence, Stillness and the In-Between in Public Spaces”
The explanation of the traditional dark-room process to produce the small scale black and white images and taking advantage of modern technology to allow for enlarged prints, in a sense is another aspect of “making space”.
Kerry tells us what initially attracted her to the work and how impressed she was at the way that Nicole responded with her camera to the emptying out of spaces caused by COVID.
The good news is that there is a walkabout of Making Space by Nicole Clare Fraser on 2 March at 17:00. So hurry to DAOR Contemporary and view these often haunting and always captivating photographs!
