Mary Visser & Sibusiso Ngwazi “In Conversation” on Sanlam Arts Round Up

Mary Visser & Sibusiso Ngwazi are in an exhibition titled “In Conversation” at Ebony/Curated Cape Town and today they are in conversation on the Sanlam Arts Round Up to explain that synergy.

Mary explains that she and Sibusiso did not know each other and that it was the gallery that brought them together and they immediately hit it off. They understood that they started their paintings in a similar way. Sibusiso explains that although they both have a similar, loose approach at the beginning – similar way of starting the painting- it then becomes a personal way forward. He acknowledges that Marc Stanes saw this connectivity and brought them together.

What inspires you? Mary says it’s Cape Town – the city’s vibrancy and energy. Her studio is in Salt River and the streets she drives through reflect the people and the  community who live there. It’s that buzz that starts her off – she has no preconceived idea. She just starts and sees where that goes. Sibusiso works on very fine canvas, which seems so fragile as opposed to the power of the work. He explains that his process is based on his experience of God and being inspired by people and his surrounds. His inspiration changes daily as he absorbs the space he’s in and that inspires him – it just adds and adds. Essentially his inspiration adds up to his experience with God.
