Passion - 90th Birthday Exhibition at MOK Gallery

Maureen Quin talks about Passion, her solo exhibition that marks her 90th birthday and her 70th year as a sculptor, at MOK Gallery, that opens on 2 March 2024.

Maureen begins by focusing on some recent highlights in her career. The one that stands out for her, based on scale alone, is the Horse for Dubai, which is four metres high. “One step at a time” says Maureen and the horse was ready to step off to Dubai!

Based in Alexandria, in the Eastern Cape, she exhibits locally and abroad. An example is her ‘Hunt Series’ a collection of 12 sculptures about man hunting man. It was shown at The Cape Gallery in 2018 before touring Germany for two years.

The move she sees in her current work is that she is concentrating more on human relationships – there’s more romance and passion. She has included three works from 1985 in this exhibition to contrast to what she calls her ‘new look’.

Maureen explains that she only works in bronze as it’s the only feasible medium, because her work is often delicate.
