Minstrel Carnival: Unruly coonery

by | Dec 24, 2013 | News | 0 comments

The Cape Town Minstrel Carnival takes place on January 4.

Despite numerous attempts over the years to tame it, curtail it, rename it, modernise it or incorporate it into a larger multicultural street celebration, the Cape Town Minstrel Carnival has remained stubbornly and rebelliously rooted in its traditions and the community. Following a historic route that links Bo-Kaap and District Six, the carnival’s unruly “coonery” remains a riotous expression of the irrepressible search for freedom. Historically celebrated on January 2 (Tweede Nuwe Jaar), the one day a year Cape slaves were given off, this year the Kaapse Klopse have moved the event to January 4 to accommodate the Muslim holy night on January 2.
