Tessa Graaff on the Arts Round Up

Tessa explains that  because of Montebello Design Centre’s association with the university, the centre is included in the Programme of the UCT Summer School and is on the UCT Summer School Curated Heritage Route .This year there are two specific themes that relate to the centre, which are the circular design of the ecosystem and that of trees.

The centre is besotted with its canopy of trees and have created a Tree Walk. The map is available at the Montebello Shop and takes you on a circular route. Tessa Graaff draws our attention to the 2 enormous Camphor trees that date back to around 1750, predating the Gardeners Cottage, which is a Victorian building. These trees were planted for their tree properties – serving as an insect repellant and the bark used for medicinal purposes. The map leads you to each group of trees on the walk, each with a plaque providing information about that species.

Montebello Tree Walk, Tessa Graaff,

Design of the circular ecosystem is reflected in the exhibition titled African Illuminations at Studio 23. Waste managed results in the creation of stunning chandeliers, which are on show. The Honey Project specialises  in artisanal honeys. All are eco-based and focus on the important contribution of bees in our environment.
