MyCiTi passengers are now able to make use of a web-based ‘trip planner’ – one of the first of its kind on the African continent.
With this new online facility, passengers can quickly and with ease plan any journey along the existing MyCiTi route.
“This is the exciting first step in the creation of a Transport for Cape Town (TCT) trip planner that will eventually include all of the different transport modes within the city,” said the City’s Mayoral Committee Member: Transport for Cape Town, Councillor Brett Herron.
MyCiTi passengers can now visit MyCiTi to view the new trip planner on the left-hand side of the screen.
Google Maps allows users to establish detailed directions based on a ‘point to point’ search. The results currently offered include walking and driving directions, but never before in South Africa have the results included public transport information for buses.
“Allowing users to customise their routes on one of the world’s most widely used mapping websites lends an ease of use, efficiency and credibility to MyCiTi and the major strides that Transport for Cape Town (TCT) is making in combining first-world transport systems and cutting edge technology,” said Councillor Herron.
“We are pleased to welcome MyCiTi to Google Maps. This partnership shows MyCiTi’s commitment to innovation, as well as serving and attracting new passengers. Together we can provide useful and accurate information to help people get to where they want to go more quickly,” said the Country Director of Google South Africa, Luke Mckend.
The City will next month activate a number of new routes and services that were made possible by the signing of 12-year vehicle operating contracts on 1 September this year.
