Gorry Bowes Taylor’s Book Choice on Fine Music Radio included reviews of two art books.
Nita Spilhaus by Peter Elliott is an excellent overview of the work of this well known Cape artist, and also provides a carefully researched  insight into the art scene and artists in South Africa in the early twentieth century. The book certainly captures the the atmosphere of that time.  Peter Elliott is the grand-nephew of Nita Spilhaus.
HandBook South African Artists by Gary Schneider is an extraordinary book of ‘portraits’.  The essay by Bronwyn Law-Viljoen titled ‘Portrait of the Artist as a  Left Hand’ provides a clue to these intriguing ‘hand prints’.  The subject applies their palm to the film emulsion, making their own self-portrait.  As Schneider explains, the variables are the gesture, physical shape of the hand, their body chemistry and ‘relationship’ to the artist at that moment.  Published by Fourthwall Books, these beautiful and intriguing images are curiously riveting.
