Oliver Scarlin & Lisa Ringwood – the opening of two solo exhibitions this Saturday, 29th October 2022 at 12h00 at Ebony/Curated Bordeaux House in Franschhoek, ties in with Franschhoek Creates.
- Oliver Scarlin ‘New Works’
Oliver Scarlin’s “New Works” invites the viewer into a privileged gaze on normally private scenes of domestic intimacy. These vignettes are playfully imagined in a curation of portraits, self-portraits, still-life paintings and ceramic works. While Scarlin’s earlier work distils the story of falling in love, these new works continue to capture the artist’s life with his partner and objects within the home. Here, however, we are also witness to an emergent imagining of queer love beyond a heteronormative couple-form, gesturing at forms ofqueer collectiveness and falling in love with queerness itself as a mode of being and living. This philosophy of community-building is replicated in the various mediums of the collection – paintings and ceramics and ceramics within paintings – as objects that exist in harmony, as symbolic echoes throughout various works or as actual, tangible objects
The defining mood that binds these various works and mediums together is therefore one of togetherness and optimism, signalling a period of transition and reflecting on embracing colour and joy. A vibrant palette of yellow, turquoise, and orange threads through portraits, self-portraits and still-life images and embodies this mood of sanguinity.
This exhibition can be viewed in person and on Artsy. | A digital catalogue is available on request.
- Lisa Ringwood ‘The Point’
Lisa Ringwood’s ceramic creations invite you into a magical natural world where reality and imagination merge. The intricately drawn birds, plants and baboons of Cape Point belong both to the real world and to a place we go to in our thoughts. There is a poignant sense of the fragility of nature in the scenes of baboons wandering in the coastal fynbos and tiny birds clinging to the local plants. Ceramics, being strong yet vulnerable to destruction through carelessness, are a perfect vehicle to convey her deep concern for the survival of our environment.
Ringwood’s work offers a playfulness and surprises with the unexpected. Pastels mixed with bolder colours, quirky patterns and designs refuse to follow rules, taking you on a unique and engaging visual journey. Her mastery of glazes, slips and oxides allows her to experiment to the full – taking her signature cobalt blue through its paces from intensity to subtlety.
This exhibition can be viewed in person and on Artsy. | A digital catalogue is available on request.
