Cape Town’s favourite market, the Oranjezicht City Farm and Day Market, will be operating to sell only essential grocery items each Saturday from April 25.
The market will operate between 9am and 2am, and parking will be free. Speaking to CapeTalk, director of the Oranjezicht City Market, Sheryl Ozinsky said that the market will be solely for the purchase of essential items; it will no longer be the social market Capetonians have come to love and expect.
Ozinsky reassured the public that all traders have the necessary permits and permissions obtained from the City of Cape Town to operate. The police have also inspected the market to ensure everything is up to scratch.
“There’s no seating, there’s no cooked food, there’s no coffee, there are no crafts, there’s nothing to eat or drink on-site; nothing but essentials,” she said to CapeTalk.
Some of the safety measures implemented at the Oranjezicht City Market include:
– Only between 20 and 30 customers will be allowed to shop at any one time
– Masks must be worn by sellers and customers, and social distancing rules will apply
– No children or dogs will be allowed to enter
– The trading area will be rearranged to allow for more distance between stalls
– Customers will have their temperatures checked digitally and will be required to sanitise their hands upon entry
– All payments will be contactless; only card or SnapScan payments will be accepted
