The final Out In Africa Gay & Lesbian Film Festival of 2014 takes place with an incredibly strong line-up of 4 feature films.
Below is the line up of films, and OIA tell us what the future holds.
The dates and venues are Thursday 13 – Sunday 16 November 2014 at Cinema Nouveau V&A Waterfront, and in Johannesburg in Rosebank.
The films are:
Love Is Strange
USA / France 2014 95min
Dir: Ira Scahs
John Lithgow and Alfred Molina play the long-term lovers and newly-weds suddenly wrenched apart. A profound and good-humoured tale of enduring love in the face of religiously inspired and sanctioned homophobia.
Pride OPENING NIGHT tickets are on sale – refreshments will be served prior to the screening, courtesy of Cinema Nouveau.
UK 2014 120min
Dir: Matthew Warchus
A feel good true story about the London ‘Pervs’ who went off to Wales to stand in solidarity with the ‘Pits’ – striking miners during Thatcher’s determined demolition of the unions. Stars Bill Nighy and Imelda Staunton, among others.
AWARDS
Cannes 2014 Queer Palm
Reaching For The Moon
Brazil 2013 118min
Dir: Bruno Barreto
This very stylish biopic dramatises the tempestuous, complicated 15 year long affair of two powerful artists – American Poet Laureate and Pulitzer Prize Elizabeth and Lota de Macedo Soares, architect and designer of the iconic Flamengo Park in Rio.
The Skeleton Twins
USA 2013 90min
Dir: Craig Johnson
Maggie and Milo are estranged twins suddenly thrown together in a time of crisis. Kristin Wiig and Bill Hader, better known as comics (Saturday Night Live) deliver wonderfully dramatic and (can they help it?) comic performances as the twins in trouble.

Sundance 2014 Waldo Salt Screenwriting Award

And the future?
“OIA will now have an office in the African Gender Institute at UCT. There we will house our substantial video and DVD library. We do not have the rights for these films, so we will have to restrict access to scholars and researchers, and we will assist Jane Bennett, Head of the AGI, to design a course around Queer Film and deliver the necessary content.
There is also the opportunity that we will be contracted as a content provider for a Video On Demand (VOD) service delivering LGBTIQ content at a very reasonable, affordable rate. As soon as we have more information we’ll let you know.
This does not mean that we will no longer have public events – as and when the money is there we shall have smaller outings. So, please do not stop with those contributions – either as direct donations, or though the MySchool initiative. Every little bit helps!
This is November, and we are near the completion of our feature film. The title is While You Weren’t Looking and the cast includes Fezile Mpela, Pertronella Tshuma, Sandi Schultz, Camilla Waldman, Lionel Newton, Thishiwe Ziqubu and Terence Bridgett. Tina Jaxa and Thembi Mtshali also appear in smaller roles. We should be complete by January 2015. The film has been funded by the National Lottery Distribution Trust Fund, with additional support from the Department of Trade and Industry. It is an all-South African affair! We are looking at an April release in South Africa and we hope to see you there.
Do join us for our final(ish) outing – 13 to 16 November at Cinema Nouveau – Rosebank and V&A.
So… we thank you for all the years, and we appeal to you to continue your support.”
MapMyWay says THANKS and we look forward to positive news from OIA in the future.
