The Cape Gallery

The Cape Gallery, Church 60 can be found in the center of the Church Street mall situated between Long and Burg Streets, within easy walking distance from the Company Gardens which was  originally established by Jan van Riebeek in 1652.

Regular exhibitions showcasing contemporary Cape artists ensure a fresh, diverse selection of paintings, ceramics, bronzes and graphics can be viewed and purchased. Also a large selection of etchings, watercolors, and prints are available to choose from. Here, at The Cape Gallery, the time honored and honed skills of fine craftmanship find respect. The selection of artwork is ample and eclectic; traditional landscapes, still life and botanical studies, portraiture, and wildlife are on offer.

Arrangements can be made and quotes obtained to pack and transport artwork to a destination of the client’s choice.

The heritage building in which the gallery is housed is a fascinating combination of eras, styles, and materials, all of which tell the story of this city. At the back of the gallery is the shell of a cottage dating back to 1781, the hearth, yellowwood ceiling, and original slate which was quarried from Robben Island are still apparent. The later additions were built with high fired blue Klinker bricks, used as ballast on sailing ships, these bricks are now plastered over. High above the dado in the front room a Georgian style decorative border can be seen.
