Don’t miss the Playing with Fire Balkan Klezmer Band performing at the Olympia Bakery in Kalk Bay 6pm on Sunday 8th October, 2017.
The band plays a festive mix of Klezmer, Balkan, Turkish and Serbian melodies with vocalist Charles “Start Wearing Purple” Summerfield.
The Playing with Fire Balkan Klezmer Band was a founder band of Cape Town’s Balkanology Parties, taking inspiration from the movies “Black Cat White Cat” and “Time of the Gypsies”. The band started with thirteen members on stage! It took the shows “Rumania, Rumania!” and “Balkan Fever” to festivals in the Cape, played at the Biscuit Mill market for nearly two years and accompanied Cape Town’s singers in the Yiddish Song Festival in the Baxter Theatre for eleven consecutive years.
It now operates as a band of six, with singer Charles Summerfield, Matthew Reid on clarinet and sax, Andre van Vuuren on accordion, Keith Tabisher on guitar, Joe Bolton on tuba and James van Minnen on percussion.
