The Playing with Fire Collective – with sparkling guest vocalist Caely – under the leadership of Matthew Reid, are set to transport you to Eastern Europe with Yiddish and Romani songs.
These cheerful musicians, pictured above, are members of the “Playing with Fire” Collective and they are presenting a concert on 3rd September at 3pm at Christ Church Constantia of their Klezmer and Balkan Gypsy music.
Playing with Fire accompanied all the Jewish singers in the city in the annual Yiddish Song Festival. It was held in the Baxter Theatre for eleven consecutive years! Playing with Fire was also one of two founding bands for the popular Balkanology parties.
If you don’t know it, klezmer is the Fiddler-on-the-Roof folk music of the Ashkenazy Jews, with typical scales that make it all sound sad, no matter how festively you play it. The bitter sweet aspect of the music makes it feel timeless and age-old. It is clarinet, violin and accordion music, with double bass and sometimes trumpet.
Balkan music sounds wacky! It was heard for the first time in the West on the soundtracks of movies made by Emir Kursturica, and created a keen following..
Get to the Playing with Fire Collective and be ready to tap your toes and ENJOY!
