Poetry: Griot girl Khadija Heeger

by | Aug 13, 2013 | News | 0 comments

Performance poet Khadija Heeger puts songs at the heart of her relationship to language.

Born and raised on the Cape Flats, her work shuns linguistic and symbolic conventions to create a poetic landscape that is alive with the contemporary yet also connected to a broader history rooted in the ancient tradition of griots. In her debut collection of poems, Beyond the Delivery Room, she creates a complex harmony (and sympathy) between public noise and private revelation. For the book’s launch, Khadija performs with musicians Elton Goslett, Jill Levenberg and Daneel van der Walt. Zenariah Barends will MC the evening.
