Re-imagining IZIKO South African National Gallery is what curator Andrew Lamprecht intended in Breaking Down the Walls, the exhibition to mark the re-opening of ISANG. Rooksana Omar, CEO, Iziko Museums of South Africa, and Dr Bongani Ndhlovu, Executive Director, Iziko Museums of South Africa talk us through the exhibition.
Listen to the Sanlam Arts Round Up on Fine Music Radio FMR 101.3fm every Friday NOW at 17h30
Rooksana Omar sets the scene by focusing the fact that over its 150 year history, the South African National Gallery has acquired more than 11 000 works in its collection. The idea behind Breaking Down the Walls was to re-think issues such as how to exhibit this extensive and varied range of artworks and how to show what there is and what might be missing amongst the collection.
Dr Bongani Ndhlovu talks about the collection reflecting many layers, which raises issues about how we see ourselves over the past 150 years. The dialogues created by the way the work has been set out makes us consider issues such as who we were, where we are now and where are we going.
The exhibition certainly reflects the diversity of the Iziko Art Collections and brings together objects and artworks from many other collections within Iziko Museums of South Africa in an innovative and exciting manner.
