David Endean, owner of the Red! The Gallery, paints the picture on this week’s Sanlam Art Round Up of what’s new at the gallery and trends and feedback in the art world generally.

Exciting things are happening at Red! The Gallery and David tells us what’s lined up in the gallery space, corner of Wale and Buitengracht Streets, where they relocated to four and a half years ago.
He comments on First Thursdays coming up next week (3 April) when Bree Street in particular becomes a party scene. The gallery will be open as part of this big event.
Framing is a service that Red! The Gallery have recently introduced and it has become an integral part of the gallery.
A private chef is now available for private functions on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays. You need to book ahead to organise a dinner party in the spacious gallery area, filled with artworks, that can seat from 10 to 40 guests.
David also reveals that about 70% of their clientele are tourists – confirming that Cape Town is the Best City in the World and number 3 as a World Capital for Culture. David mentions a few of their most popular artists. Of interest it was his brother, Michael Waters, an artist that was the initial reason he decided to open a gallery 20 years ago. He was originally working in IT before moving into art. His background in IT has been useful, as via an app, he sees how animation has become part of the art scene – a trend reflected in the recent Investec Cape Town Art Fair.
The reasonable cost of art, priced in SA Rands, is an added attraction for overseas buyers. In Singapore art was 3 times the cost compared to South Africa.
A visit to Red! The Gallery will provide you with a wide range of South African art, curated by owner David Endean, to engage with and admire.
