Sanlam Arts Round Up with Richard Kilpert

Richard Kilpert, the new AVA Gallery Director, talks us through ‘unmourned bodies‘ the current exhibition that focuses on Namibian Artists, curated by Jo Rogge.

Listen to the Sanlam Arts Round Up on Fine Music Radio FMR 101.3fm every Friday at 17h30

On this week’s Sanlam Arts Round Up, Richard gives us the background to this exhibition and the longstanding relationship that the Cape Town Association for Visual Arts has with Namibia. And he’s also asked to explain the intriguing title – ‘unmourned bodies’.

Richard explains that this is contemporary art from Namibia, that is looking and reviewing its history – “a real excavation” as he puts it.

Curated by Jo Rogge, who asked artists to review the more than 2 000 works in the Namibian Arts Association collection, choose a work, and reinterpret it in their own way. It’s an example of dealing with the past in the present.

There is an outpouring of creativity in a multiplicity of media, with texture playing an important role.

Good news is that on Saturday 15th at 11:00 there will be a gathering of some of the artists and Jo Rogge that is open to the public. A wonderful opportunity to engage with the work and the creators before the show comes down on 21 April!
