The Robben Island maintenance programme is ongoing and contrary to the narrative that is circulating about the state of disrepair. So, for the records, here is a media release from the Robin Island Museum, which is a World Heritage Site.
“The narrative perpetuated by certain stakeholders, that Robben Island Museum (RIM) is in a state of disrepair is completely devoid of truth and would appear to have malicious intent.
The photographs (currently circulating on social media) which show certain buildings with the roof collapsed, were taken four years ago during site inspections with the contractor, to assess the damage and plan for the repairs.”Ā (The photograph is one of several available that clearly show the upgraded infrastructure as it currently looks..)
āWe wish to categorically deny any allegations of infrastructure collapse and assure the public that the island is fit and has been welcoming visitors to its shores, with the highest visitor numbers experienced during the December peak season, post COVID-19,ā said Abigail Thulare, RIM CEO.
It should also be noted that the upkeep and maintenance of RIM as a World Heritage Site and Marine Protected Area, is jointly managed by RIM, the Department of Sport, Arts and Culture (DSAC) and the Department of Public Works and Infrastructure (DPWI), all of whom are committed to seeing RIM flourish.
Needless to say, the economic recovery plan post COVID-19, needs to be seen in the context of large-scale revenue losses over the last two years, and as such, maintenance is prioritised for the core infrastructure in the spaces that are covered during the various tour options.
This being said, there are areas (not for public access) in dire need of maintenance and these are prioritised in line with the available budget.
āOur recovery plans are well underway, with a focus not only on improved products and services, but also improving the customer experience at every touchpoint. It is unfortunate that not all stakeholders are necessarily allies, and will seek to undermine the work that so many dedicated and committed employees are doing,ā said Thulare.
RIM is fully operational and continues to create memorable experiences for scores of visitors, both locally and internationally.”
