Opening First Thursday, 7th September at 4pm

Robert Koch has a solo exhibition titled  Morphic Wonder at The Cape Gallery, opening on First Thursday, 7th September at 4pm.

Light is responsible for setting the atmosphere and mood, often taking on the role of the central focal point as in Morphic Wonder where the brightest and the darkest elements converge as the sun strikes the clouds.

Light is so tightly woven into my design and thought process that it naturally overflowed into my decisions about which portrait artists to choose from.

Rembrandt was a master of light. Genuinely inspired, I have incorporated the methods of the old masters into my portrayal of African wildlife, as seen in paintings like Leopard’s Lair. This fusion beautifully marries the untamed essence of Africa with the rich aesthetics of the Dutch Golden Age, resulting in a truly distinctive artistic expression.

Sargent is one of the greatest portrait painters of the twentieth century. I like his style of loose but controlled painting and his remarkable ability to capture light and movement.

Bouguereau created exquisite, gentle skin tones in his paintings. It’s fascinating how he portrays the human face with elongated nose bridges and large eyes. The skin looks tangible, but the facial features are idealized.

As a child, Robert accompanied his father, a painter, on frequent painting excursions into the African bush. With the facility gained from this early exposure Robert has sought new challenges and views of the African landscape.
