The Rupert Museum & Social Impact Arts Prize will be showcasing at Decorex Africa on 16 – 19 June at Cape Town International Convention Centre.
You can look forward to viewing an IN-MOTION: Art of the Space Age pop up including mesmerizing optical, kinetic & futuristic artworks by international artists in connection with Rupert Museum’s OPEN CALL TO THE PUBLIC. This is the Rupert Museum’s second OPEN CALL following the first instalment during 2020. The OPEN CALL’s aim is to inspire and activate engagement with the permanent collections managed by the Rupert Museum as well as presenting upcoming artists and creatives the opportunity to exhibit and sell their work.
The Space Age, a notion already capturing popular imagination in the 1950s through architecture, fashion, film and design was no less celebrated by visual artists. This fascination with the new placed pure line, movement, form and colour at its centre.
The advances in technology, especially post war, and the start of the modern machine age gave artists access to new materials such as plastic, moulded glass, Perspex, transparent screens, and electric motors. This grabbed artists’ attention and was quickly adapted as a new form of expression and leading to multiple and innovative discoveries by individuals and artist groups in creating moving images, distortions, or illusions.
Auguste Herbin created his Alphabet Plastique, a concept described in the book L’art non-figuratif non-objectif (1949) as a system in which each letter of the alphabet relates to a colour, shape and music notes. Join the creation of a unique design based on Herbin’s Alphabet Plastique at the Rupert Museum stand at Decorex Africa.
The Social Impact Arts Prize awards artistic projects that reflect on the world’s social challenges today, and believe that artists have the inspiration, and can inspire a collective will to change the ways we live positively.
And if you’ve started to think: “This doesn’t sound like Decorex Cape Town!” then you’re beginning to understand the extent to which Decorex Africa has been reimagined!
All this striking newness is combined with the decor and design solutions of tomorrow. Don’t just envision a living and entirely shoppable apartment, come and experience it at the show. It’ll be there, alongside key features showing what’s next, a Summit of African changemakers, and so, so, so much more, that you’re likely to need a few days to take it all in. Decorex Cape Town doesn’t sit at the cutting edge of the now, it presents the future. Equip yourself for the decades to follow!
