Donavan provides the context in relation to the Portrait Award, and this being the entry period for this year’s award.  André Serfontein was last years winner. Annelie Venter was in the top 40 last year and also a finalist previously. This is the solo exhibition by André following the award. And for Annelie her exhibition, titled A Journey, is a retrospective.

André explains that his title BETWIXT is about exploring spaces in between and issues of ambiguity. There’s are cross overs between time, between masculine and feminine, boy and man. As an established artist, the Portrait Award was meaningful. giving him great exposure and feedback. Explaining his process, he works intuitively – ideas develope as he starts drawing and the theme continues to evolve when he moves onto the canvas. The winning portrait on the show reflects a contrast between dark and light, relaxation and tension.

Donavan suggests that the work by Annelie Venter is also in between in respect of her exhibition. It reflects a personal journey and narrative over 22 years since exhibiting at Rust-en-Vrede. The exhibition is appropriately titled OP REIS / THE JOURNEY. The work is a retrospective in this respect and very satisfying. It includes older work, some based on family photos, and landscapes. Being based on a farm in Piketburg, her newer works are influenced by that location and include botanicals.

In the Clay Museum are the works of Sandile B Cele and Johan Swart. Donavan comments on how both artists have very different ways of expressing themselves in their chosen medium of earthenware. Sandile is influenced by his Zulu heritage yet producing very contemporary work – he refers to as Zulu-Goth. Johan moulds his vessels into objects looking like cardboard and oil cans. The work is vey graphic and not like clay.
