Four EXCELLENT reasons to head out to Durbanville

The Rust-en-Vrede Gallery + Clay Museum is excited to present four new exhibitions opening in the gallery and clay museum simultaneously on Saturday 10 August 2024 at 11 am.

Salon A – You Were Here by Craig Cameron-Mackintosh
2019 Portrait Award winner Craig Cameron-Mackintosh revisits moments from his own travels, both locally and abroad. Aptly titled “You Were Here”, Craig continues his exploration of a painted ‘visual journal’ from his 2021 sell-out exhibition, Give Me Space, at Rust-en-Vrede Gallery, recreating fleeting, yet memorable moments from these trips. Not all are big or noteworthy experiences but sometimes small, unassuming ones. People, places, things and sometimes simply the changing light are captured on different materials like linen, cotton, paper and found objects like vintage maps and unsent postcards. Salon B – Ceramic Explorations: A Journey in Clay by Martin Swart
In this retrospective exhibition, Martin revisits past creations in his signature style whilst simultaneously ‘moving forward’ by incorporating experimental techniques and glazes in his new wares. He continues to explore the materiality and changeability of his chosen medium; the ceramics presented becoming indicative of his growth as a potter during his 22 years of working with clay.

Salon C – Lounge
The group exhibition ‘Lounge’ is an ode to relaxation, whether lounging by the pool during summer or curling up in front of the fireplace during winter. Participating artists include Adele van Heerden, Anastasia Sarantinou, Andrew Kayser, Bastiaan van Stenis, Corné Eksteen, Chris Denovan, Danielle Jordaan, Dee Donaldson, Drummond Murphy, Fanie Buys and Karen Elkington.
Curated by Hamlin Jansen van Vuuren.

Clay Museum – The CUBE: Vetplant / Succulent / Nencasa
This installation of the ubiquitous vetplant by Catherine Brennon and Adele Sherlock reflects their journey of exploring the expressive possibilities of something familiar through inspiration, imagination and interpretation.
Catherine Brennon initially chose to recreate  specific plants however with time became increasingly fascinated by the structure and colours of the plants resulting in the more abstract exaggerated and distorted forms on show.
Adele Sherlock was inspired by the plant’s intricate, fibrous, inner skeleton exposed when the plant dries out and fossilizes .This quality is captured by her choosing to work with  porcelain’s natural bone-like white colour.
