The 4th annual Spring Fun Kennel Building Day presented by SA.MAST and Builders Warehouse takes place on Saturday 31 August. Animal lovers from across Cape Town will come together to build 200 kennels which is double the amount set as last year’s target.
The South African Mass Animal Sterilisation Trust (SA.MAST) focuses on radically reducing the number of unwanted puppies and kittens through a consistent mass animal sterilisation and primary treatment programme in communities that normally cannot afford this sort of care. Says Tamsin Nel, director and founder of SA.MAST: “The Kennel Building Day forms an integral part of our fundraising and awareness programme for the year. Our goal for 2013 is to sterilise 2 000 animals and medical assistance and clinic costs are enormously expensive. In July our veterinary fees were R 97 776 alone.”
The fun filled day will start at 10am in the indoor section of the Academy of Maths and Science in Constantia. Kennel builders will receive an instruction leaflet, a station number and pre-prepared and cut-to-size kennel wood. Delicious food and beverages will be on sale and 1st, 2nd and 3rd prize will be awarded to the best built and most beautifully painted kennels. Prisoners from Pollsmoor Prison have been preparing 700 second hand wood pallets in their workshop for the big day.
“The Kennel Day participants take such pride in the building and decoration of the kennels, but this is almost secondary to the emotions felt by animal guardians and their communities when they receive one. The difference that these kennels make to both the animal and to the people around that animal, justifies the effort put into this initiative,” says Nel.
People attending can expect a feel good fun filled day while being creative for a really good cause. “The amount of energy and goodwill at these events feels electric. It is thrilling to experience and something one will treasure forever,” adds Nel. The day ends with a sea of colourful, beautifully decorated kennels – a sight to behold.
Tickets: for Kennel Building Day are R40 per person and R20 for Children and are available at the entrance. This is also a fun team building opportunity for corporate businesses. Corporates can pre-book staff teams at R1,000 per kennel.
