Stefan Hundt, who has been the Curator of the collection since 1997, tells us what’s on the agenda for 2025. With Human Rights Day next week, he thought it appropriate to look at works reflecting human rights but also social upheaval.
This is the start of of a bigger exhibition, when he will be pulling works out of the ‘icebox’ and pit on exhibition things that have not been seen for years. Peculiar items – images of horror we didn’t want to look at , to works that are very contemporary.
In this first iteration, the works focus on social issues, such as those of Elza Miles (Biotha) and Dianne Victor. Also in the 1970’s, Sanlam commissioned work of the Verwoerd Cabinet.
This combination of works reflect on the times and the people. Of interest is that currently the Norval Foundation has an exhibition titled “We the People” that reflects on the artwork produced since 1994, and the SA National Gallery has the Sue Williamson retrospective, covering her work since 1972. A great confluence pf influences coming together at the same time!
Looking at this 60th year of the Sanlam Art Collection, started in 1965, Stefan wants to exhibit work of the 70’s and 80’s not seen for a long time. He wants to bring them out from the cold into the warmth of the galley. He hopes that people can engage with the works from the perspective of time.
Stefan will keep adding to this exhibition, ending with approximately 120 works ranging from the traditional to modern and those conceptually conceived. This is a work in progress that will be completed by June and reflect on what has happened over the past 60 years.
The good news is that Stefan Hundt is available to do curated walkabouts of the exhibition. You need to call ahead to set up an appointment. (See info below) An offer you can’t refuse!
