Sanlam Landscapes Exhibition – Stefan Hundt, Chief Curator of the Sanlam Art Collection, walks us through the exhibition at the Sanlam Art Gallery. on this week’s Arts Round Up on Fine Music Radio.
Listen to the Arts Round Up on Fine Music Radio FMR 101.3fm on Fridays at 17h30
Stefan explains that the reason for looking at landscapes so carefully is that it’s a strong part of South African tradition, from the colonisers to the present and that subject matter still engages artists as well as the audience. Given the current focus on abstraction and installation, he felt it was time to re-look some of the ‘old stuff’ and to also see how the landscape gets reinterpreted over time..
Next year Sanlam will be celebrating their 60th year of collecting. The first exhibition in 2025 will focus on only 40 works, with individual exhibitions on key artists during the year. The focus on landscapes in this exhibition, allowed him to select landscape works by various artists, old and new, and show them in dialogue with each other. From the more than 140 Maggie Loubser works in the collection, 4 are on show, which reflect the changes in her approach over her career. Opposite these works are photographs by Ashley Walters, of this own personal landscape of Uitsug. By contrast there is the digital work by Jacque Coetzer (photo above) who takes a wry look at at developments and their impact on the environment. These are only 3 of the artists amongst many chosen for this exhibition.
The Sanlam Landscapes exhibition is about rethinking and repositioning our thoughts about the landscapes we are living in. It’s encouraging a conversation about where we live.
And Stefan Hundt is available to engage in that conversation and walk you though the exhibition at the Sanlam Art Gallery. He suggests the best way is to contact him on WhatsApp 083 457 2699 to set up a time and date, or else to phone him on 021 947 3359,
