Sea Point swimming pool will play host to an aquatics carnival this weekend, which it is hoped will become an annual event.
One of the City of Cape Town’s flagship facilities is partnering with Western Province Aquatics to host an aquatics carnival on Sunday 1 March 2015. The Sea Point swimming pool, which has recently undergone extensive renovations, will be the venue for the water-based fun day.
‘The event is aimed at bringing communities and families together and introducing various water sports and activities to our residents. All of this takes place at one of our most popular and inclusive facilities,’ said the City’s Mayoral Committee Member for Community Services and Special Projects, Alderman Belinda Walker.
The Sea Point swimming pool was ranked as one of the world’s top 10 swimming pools by British newspaper, The Guardian, and attracts more than 20 000 visitors per month in December and January.
‘The pool is one of our most popular recreational venues and the carnival will not only showcase the facility, but it will also emphasise water safety and encourage young children to become involved in water-based sports,’ said Alderman Walker.
This carnival is the first of what is hoped will become an annual event.
Activities on the day will include a corporate relay challenge, a swimming clubs relay, learn-to-swim programmes, water polo, artistic swimming, biathlon and a diving display.
Visitors will be able to enjoy music and entertainment while relaxing on the grass in this beautiful setting. The younger children can enjoy various recreational activities, the learn-to-swim programme hosted by the Sport, Recreation and Amenities Department, various water rides, and the very popular hamster ball.
The Sea Point swimming pool will close at 15:00 on Saturday 28 February 2015 to allow for the setup of the event and the use of the swimming pool will be limited to carnival-goers only on Sunday 1 March 2015. The carnival starts at 10:00 and entry is R50 per person.
