The Signum Quartet is the final concert of the Cape Town Concert Series season, this coming Saturday 23rd November at the Baxter Concert Hall.
Bridge the Chasms that Divide – A South African Celebration, features South African Xandi van Dijk on viola, Florian Donderer and Annette Walther on violin and Thomas Schmitz on cello. The project was launched in Bremen on 27 April 2024 and the quartet will tour across South Africa this month.
The concert has a varied programme of music for string quartet which not only spans centuries, but celebrates our living South African composers. The happy ‘Lark’ quartet by Haydn, written as he was easing into a comfortable and well-earned retirement, leads to brand new compositions by South African composers Lise Morrison, Abel Selaocoe, and a collaboration by Matthijs van Dijk and African Music Specialist Dizu Plaatjies. The joyful Quartet Nr. 2 by Schumann rounds off a programme designed to lift the spirits.
