The fabric of Simon's Town's history

Tazneem Wentzel, Education Officer at the Simon’s Town Museum, convinces us that we need to visit the to get an understanding of the stories that make Simon’s Town such a diverse and interesting area between sea and mountain. “There’s lots more to Simon’s Town than penguins at Boulders Beach!”

Listen to the Sanlam Arts Round Up on Fine Music Radio FMR 101.3fm on Fridays at 17h30

As Tazneem goes on to explain that the stories focus on the social history and community history of the town. What are the stories that took root here. There are stories about ghosts, baboons, sea, ocean and fishing. The museum ensures that you get a look at what makes up the fabric of Simon’s Town’s history. It’s a very diverse area that is multi cultural and the stories are colourful and beautiful.

You enter through the early history room that looks at people and place with exhibits that include films and artifacts that help you see and get to grips with these stories.

Tazneem then talks about the museum’s education policy. The purpose is to be inclusive and get learners and adults to  think critically. It’s to provide tools to think about history in one’s own terms.

She tells us about the new lecture series titled Brainstorms on the Bay, and fortunately we had received the full programme which we reported on HERE.

LOTS of excellent reasons to head for the Simon’s Town Museum. Promise – I’ll be there SOON!
