Stefan Hundt, Curator of the Sanlam Art Collection, talks us through Sights Unseen, the current exhibition he has put together at the Sanlam Art Gallery in Belville.
Listen to the Sanlam Arts Round Up on Fine Music Radio FMR 101.3fm every Friday NOW at 17h30
Stefan Hundt explains that Sights Unseen refers to new work, by up and coming artists, that have been added to the collection in the past few years and have not been shown before, plus a selection of work by well known artists that have not been seen by the public in a long time.
The exhibition includes the optophonetic and concrete poetry of Willem Boshoff and you can link into the sound file that completes this series of work.
A work by Lyness Magwaza, titled The Wild Beast ran away with a Child, made in 1991 at Rourke’s Drift Art and Craft Centre is referred to. (see above)
One of the new works is by Frans Thoka and Stefan explains the significance of this landscape, a multi-media work produced on a prison blanket, that adds to its presence and significance. This landscape is shown in contrast to some of the traditional landscapes from the collection.
Examples of works by established artists are mentioned and this ‘talkabout’ with Stefan certainly whets one’s appetite to visit Sights Unseen.
