Stratagems – solo exhibition by juli Jana at Cape Gallery

juli Jana has returned from a recent solo exhibition at the Made In Greenwich Gallery in London to exhibit Stratagems, a solo exhibition of paintings and graphics at The Cape Gallery.

juli Jana invites the spectator to be a participant in a vibrant, visual experience. Her work has a lyrical, poetic quality and fluidity of expression, lending itself to interpretation. For her, ART is an experience to share.

Shapes, lines, abstract forms, sometimes with a reference to realism, form the basis of her work in small and large compositions. Colour and tone are presented in their stark intensity or in subtle variations. As with Mark Rothko, colour in itself can be a theme.

She works in oils, acrylics and various printing methods. Her graphic work encompasses etchings, collographs, lithographs and monoprints.

juli Jana has held a number of solo shows in South Africa and in England, where she studied printmaking. She has participated in various group shows both with printmakers and painters.

She is constantly exploring new perspectives, taking her inspiration from her surroundings, whether city or landscape. This she explores in the abstract.

Artist statement:
“Where does a ball of string end? We start with something and follow the line to the unknown.
I observe spaces, lines, marks, colours and images. These are on walls, skies, landscapes, faces. I am a flâneur walking the world. Sometimes it is colour that shouts or gently fades; it could be markings on a wall or a space in time that arrests my attention.
I invite the observer to participate with the artist in these excursions, to create his/her own experience when looking at a work of art.
All mediums excite me. I explore pigment from the brush to the canvas, the pressure of the printing press in producing etchings. The medium used to express the idea adds its own characteristic markings and magic.”
