African Tales is extremely proud to present Street Theatre Festival 2014 on the 22nd March 2014, 10:00am at Khayelitsha. The festival will be held on the streets, with main venue being Harare Business Square opposite Harare Library. There won’t be any ticketing – so it’s a free invitation to come and join in this event.
Street Theatre Festival is an outdoor festival that journeys through the streets of particular community and makes use spaces and neighbour’s yards and living rooms as performances spaces.
The festival is about making use of urban environment and how can we make an urban space intensify performers, and how can performerss intensify an urban space? The festival is a creative process working with small site specific, physical and verbal situations. This joint venture between organisers, Performers and community clearly articulate both social and community cohesion.
Street Theatre Festival is aimed at nurturing new talent in writing, directing, performing and producing. One of the wishes of the festival is to give young people and festival participants, who are not attached to the established groups, the opportunity to meet about theatre matters with other young people from the immediate society. This festival will give the people who live of our society a chance to experience something totally different. The Festival goals are to attract top talent, cultivate young artists and produce reinterpreted versions of classics and new plays from gifted playwrights and to continue to attract audiences with the quality and ambition of our work.
The Street Theatre Festival in Khayelitsha will be one of the most prestigious cultural events ever to infect the community and it will possess a major contribution to the development of the community theatre and audience development.
The 1st edition will include local theatre makers and local groups [Street Theatre Festival seeks to educate and expose the theatre experience for the participants on and behind the stage, and uplift theatre to diverse audiences through entertainment. Street Theatre Festival provides our societies with an opportunity to come together and unify its diverse population.]
