Thato Mogotsi – Artist in Residence Programme at Zeitz MOCAA

Thato Mogotsi, talks us through the Artist in Residence Programme at Zeitz MOCAA and introduces us to the current resident Berni Searle, on the Arts Round Up.

Thato Mogotsi is a curator and researcher currently working as assistant curator at Zeitz MOCAA. She tells us about the Artist in Residence programme and the current resident, Berni Searle.

This is the 6th Artist in Residence Programme at Zeitz MOCAA, which is aimed at Cape Town based artists, allowing them the opportunity of working in a studio at the museum, This is generally for a 6 to 9 month period. The space is open to the public, although there is also a private area, to allow the artist to develop and try out ideas. But essentially opening the studio space allows for the process to be exposed. This is a unique part of the museum’s programme,

Berni Searle

Berni Searle will be in residence through to 2 March 2025 and is providing the opportunity for  us to see what to expect from her now. The public space contains an extensive archive of her work since graduation in the early 1990’s until today. You get to see how diverse and prolific she has been. Photography is the tool that Berni has used consistently. In her early work she has incorporated Polaroid photographs. You see the developments from early sytages and have some sense of the trajectory of her work,

Berni has consistently been part of her media, with images of herself being very present. Now she is also focusing on particular sites in Cape Town. Will she incorporate her bod and sites in her new body of  work?

The public programme will provide opportunities to meet and engage with the artist. So, WATCH THIS SPACE and keep in touch with Zeitz MOCAA to when this will take place.
