The Big Issue #271 – 21 January to 20 February 2019- available from your favourite vendor around the city.
Usually, this time of year is closely associated with people making New Year’s resolutions and setting goals for themselves. Blah, blah, blah. We’ve opted to bring you stories of people and organisations doing amazing and new things already, so early in the year.
We couldn’t talk about what’s new without turning our attention to Mr Invention himself, Elon Musk.
Love him or hate him, Elon’s trailblazing technologies are making headlines across the world. But he’s not the only South African leading the way when it comes to tech. Start-up company RD9 Solutions is introducing high school learners to the fascinating world of robotics, while teens from the Helderberg Robotics Club have represented the country at the World Robot Olympiad (see page 15).
On the science front, UWC’s Dr Fanelwa Ngece-Ajayi is changing the way township youth perceive science, technology, engineering and mathematics through her non-profit organisation, AmaQawe ngeMfundo (see page 24).
Whether a good crime news story is your thing, or you would much rather grow your own garden, this issue has something for everyone, including the little ones. Top crime reporter Maygene de Wee tells us some dark and thrilling lawbreaker tales (see page 10), while the Little Issue is packed with science facts and activities.
As always, The Big Issue value your feedback and would love to hear from you on this and other features in the magazine. Send your comments to info@bigissue.org.za.
Get your copy and be part of job creation in South Africa. It’s more than just a good deed; it’s a damn good read.
