Derek Carelse, MD of The Big Issue, introduces us to Ingrid Jones. who has been involved with the magazine for several years as part of Mikatekomedia Publishing..
Ingrid explains that the main issue is to ensure sales of The Big Issue so that the vendors have an income. Her view is that in the new world people want shorter, punchier and more immediate content. So she is introducing a more journal type pf approach. She is also approaching more writers and asking them to donate their time and words, and so bring a newer and fresher approach to content.
The Vendor Art Programme is an example of The Big Issue helping to empower vendors to develop and create an additional source of income. Elaine Millin is the facilitator for this exciting programme. The brilliant painting of a protea on the cover of The Big Issue #336 is by Vendor Artist, Batsi Jorofani. And his work and work of other artists are selling quite well. This programme provides vendors with an added art income! A selection of Vendor art works is shown in every edition of The Big Issue and a bigger selection can be seen online. The monthly selection of Vendor Art is also promoted each month on MapMyway.
Derek also points out that The Big Issue has increased in price to R40. The increase has been necessary as with increased cost of paper and other expenses, the operation has been running at a loss. They are now hoping to break even. But at R40 it’s still a great Investment.
As Ingrid points out – don’t do a guilt buy. As their slogan says – buying The Big is is a GOOD deed and a GOOD read!
