The Cape Gallery Summer Review is a group exhibition, that will be on show till the 29th March – so please hurry over and enjoy soonest.
“Cape Summers are an exhilarating experience; the sunshine beckons and there is much to explore and enjoy”, comments gallery owner, Gail Dorje.
“Our culturally diverse heritage is evident in the regional art and architecture. It can often be found in unexpected places, those that are reminiscent of a past lifestyles evident in John Kramer’s paintings of corner café’s or Vanessa Berline’s evocations of circus episodes that she paints on gold leaf or David Thorpe’s literary reference to Mervyn Peake’s Gormenghast trilogy in his painting of Gertrude.”
John Kramer is an artist with a formidable memory who has an impressive archive of photographs he has taken of the cafés, general dealer’s shops, hairdressing salons and haberdasheries.  This resource enables him to recreate the façade of a building as it was in the 50’s, 60’s 70’s or 80’s in his inimitable photorealistic style. When asked why he chose to paint ‘The Pardon Café, Worcester, he recalled a time when it was known as Omar Valley’s café, where he, as a child, could buy fruit, vegetables, the occasional coconut, Simba chips, big bags of peanuts as well as cool drinks and comics. Today the building that once housed Omar Valley’s café still stands devoid of colour and signage. John Kramer has painted the café as it was in the ’80s,  appropriately named the ‘Pardon Café as it stands adjacent to Church Square and the police station at the corner of Adderley Street and High Street in the sleepy town of Worcester.
