The Labia Theatre is the oldest independent art-repertory cinema in South Africa and listed as an Art House Cinema in the Arts + Crafts Map. For the past 4 decades, under the direction of Ludi Kraus, it has been operating as a cinema on the alternative circuit appealing mainly to the more discerning viewer who enjoys its quality product and the charm of its old-world ambience.
In an interview on the Sanlam Arts Round Up on Fine Music Radio -101.3fm, Ludi Kraus tells us how things have changed and developed as a result of the pandemic.
The Labia Theatre, originally an Italian Embassy ballroom, was opened by Princess Labia in May 1949 as a theatre for the staging of live performances. In 2019 The Labia celebrated the building’s 70th birthday. How could one anticipate the scenario unfolding less than a year later when we went into lockdown in March 2020.
