Dreams meet immersive reality at The Cape Gallery

The Sea the Sea, at The Cape Gallery, is a themed exhibition showcasing artists reflecting upon their personal connection to the sea. Here dreams meet immersive reality, waves pound the shore, monsters rise from unplumbed depths.

Mandy Lake
“Breaking Dawn captures a backlit breaking wave during the early morning hours. There’s something magical about the interplay of light and water, where the first rays of sunlight delicately skim across the ocean’s surface. In this moment, the wave comes to life, bursting with an explosive array of colours. By painting this scene on a large triptych canvas, my goal is to immerse the viewer in this breathtaking natural wonder. I want them to feel the gentle caress of dawn’s light, hear the rhythmic ebb and flow of the tide, and experience the overwhelming sense of awe that the ocean can inspire.”

Simon Jones:
Quoting the late Eldred Green in his Lantern article of April 1982 on myself:

‘Long before Jung observed that depiction of the sea often implied that the artist was looking into his own mind, with the sea as its symbol, Charles Baudelaire [1821-1867] wrote a famous poem about man’s relationship to the sea. This poem is a key to Jones’s frequent inclusion of the sea in his paintings of the human predicament.’ [Lead photo above: Simon Jones/ Easter/ 77 x 102 cm/ Acrylic on canvas]

Peter van Straten:
“We are all of the sub-species Homo Absurdis Always searching for what we’ve already found.”
