Theatre lovers – GO! Vigil by Morris Panych is a theatrical treat, deservedly receiving rave reviews.
Vigil is a black comedy about Kemp (Graham Hopkins), a self centred and shallow person who finds himself, through his own errors and inattentiveness, in a life-and-death situation with his aunt Grace (Vanessa Cooke), an elderly lady on her death bed. Hopkins and Cooke put in totally convincing, perfectly judged and timed, quietly bravura performances. This is acting skill at its finest by two seasoned actors. Kemp does not stop talking and Grace barely says a word, but is equally present.
Vigil is a play of twisted circumstance and surprising turns, deliciously absurd, incredibly funny, and poignantly tender, with a wonderfully pervese ending.
The set by Julia Anastasopoulis is an applied art installation. Christopher Weare directs assuredly and with flair.
