First Thursdays Exhibition at AVA Gallery
First Thursdays has assembled an exhibition at the AVA Gallery titled Together: An exhibition celebrating 10 years of First Thursdays.
First Thursdays started as a simple idea to activate Cape Town’s city centre after hours. The first edition took place in September 2012, with six art spaces (the AVA being one of them) keeping their doors open late, and a small crowd of curious Capetonians setting out to explore the programme on foot.
Since then, the event has taken place on the first Thursday of just about every month for the past 10 years. The initiative has grown and evolved, taking on a healthy complexity and creating a multitude of reasons for people from across the city to gather in one place.
This coming together of people – different, similar, diverse and familiar – is at the core of what First Thursdays has always been about. This exhibition is an opportunity to acknowledge, appreciate and celebrate First Thursdays as a once-a-month coming together of people and its contribution to the life of the city.
Public Open Call
In the spirit of access that First Thursdays has always championed, all artwork in the exhibition has been sourced through a public open call. The end result is a convivial collection of artworks from over eighty contributors.
Gareth Pearson, a co-founder of First Thursdays, will be a guest on the weekly Sanlam Arts Round Up on Friday 16 September – so be sure to tune in to Fine Music Radio at 16h10 to get more insights into this exciting exhibition.
