A small exhibition of tufted artworks is the newest additions to the walls of Hamilton Gallery at the Old Biscuit Mill.
Tufting is the art of threading yarn through fabric in small loops to create a carpet-like texture that can be cut and shaved smooth to reveal the colourful image created in the time-consuming process. Two artists form part of this small exhibition of tufted tapestries, both of whom have been involved at Hamilton Gallery for quite some time.
Max Goldin, a South African born artist now living in Amsterdam, works in digital illustration and mixed media. His newest artistic explorations have been into the medium of rug tufting. He uses his personal experiences, translating them into abstracted imagery featuring his characteristic sense of curiosity and whimsy. There are six of Max’s tufted tapestries currently on show, ranging from the smallest 46 x 46 cm to the largest which is 105 x 150 cm
While some of the tufted artworks are based on his large archive of illustrations, others are made freehand with no plan in mind, allowing spontaneity and play to determine the final image.
The other featured artist for this small exhibition is Paloma. Paloma is a true mixed-media artist who specialises in sculptural or “craft” mediums such as coloured plaster work, embroidery, clay, and now tufting.
While Max uses an electric tufting gun, Paloma uses a handheld punch needle which makes her creative process much slower. Her time-consuming technique, also part of her embroidery work, allows her to take long moments of stillness and meditation while she works. Her artworks are completely abstract images with an intense focus on colour and texture. Many of her pieces evoke dreamlike emotions or seem like references to the natural world.
These tapestries and artworks are all about soft edges and fluffy texture – they were made to be seen and admired up close. So head for the Hamilton Gallery at the Old Biscuit Mill.
