The World Association of Zoos and Aquariums (WAZA) recently welcomed Two Oceans Aquarium, in South Africa, to its global membership-base.
“WAZA is pleased to welcome its newest member, the Two Oceans Aquarium, to the WAZA community. The addition of the Two Oceans Aquarium to WAZA expands representation among members and contributes to the continued growth and development of our membership base,” said WAZA Interim Chief Executive Officer, Martín Zordan. “As we welcome our newest member, we celebrate the expanding of our global membership as well as the continuation of furthering our goals within animal welfare, conservation and environmental sustainability with other like-minded organisations.”
Two Ocean’s Aquarium Chief Executive Officer, Michael Farquhar responded: “We are delighted to have been afforded the opportunity to join WAZA. I look forward to interacting with and learning from the many WAZA members from all over the world and I hope that we are able to contribute in a meaningful way. Thank you for the opportunity, I look forward to us becoming part of this greater community.”
The Two Oceans Aquarium in Cape Town opened in 1995 and is named for its location on the southern tip of the African continent where the Indian and Atlantic oceans meet.

- The Two Oceans Aquarium prioritises conservation, education and environmental sustainability, and has received various accolades for its sustainability initiatives.
- The Aquarium was recently awarded the ‘Best Responsible Attraction’ in the 2019 African Responsible Tourism Awards and also
- picked up silver in the ‘Best for Global Goals Reporting’ category.
The Two Oceans Aquarium’s key sustainability focus areas are ocean plastic pollution and sustainable seafood, and the Aquarium leads a number of environmental campaigns to increase awareness and promote behaviour change. The Aquarium is also involved in the conservation and research of threatened and protected species, including seals, turtles, penguins, sharks, and some commercially important line fish.
In 2018, it established the Two Oceans Aquarium Education Foundation to promote and expand on its educational, conservation and research initiatives in the form of a registered Public Benefit Organisation.
The Two Oceans Aquarium is a member of the Pan-African Association of Zoos and Aquaria (PAAZA), the South African Network for Coastal and Oceanographic Research (SANCOR), the Africa Association of Visitor Experiences and Attractions (AAVEA) and sits on the steering committee for the International Aquarium Congress (IAC).
