The Smart Living Challenge Zone at the Two Oceans Aquarium comprises four digital interactive installations which address the themes of energy, water, waste and biodiversity.
The new interactive zone is an exciting initiative to educate children and adults alike on making smarter choices to preserve and protect the environment.
Today we focus on WATER.
The water touch screen (see photo above) challenges visitors to answer a series of multiple choice questions in order to stop leaking pipes and dripping taps in an animated plumbing system. A virtual water container on one side will fill up with saved water and the goal is to fix as many leaks simultaneously so the water savings tank fills up to the top. It will require multiple visitors to work as a team to win the game.
Having water is a right and saving water is everyone’s responsibility. Let us all make an effort to save water every day which will save our environment for future generations.
• Reduce wasteful water consumption – check and fix water leaks, save where you can with saving tips, retrofit showerheads
• Reuse water from showers, baths in your garden – plant indigenous plants and trees
• Prevent water wastage and sewer blockages – adjust automatic sprinklers and don’t put foreign material down toilets and drain pipes
• Comply with water and waste water by-laws – keep to watering times, fit correct nozzles to hosepipes, etc
• Report water wastage, pipe bursts, water by-law transgressions – use the sms number of call centre number, insist on a reference number
• Commit to water saving – become a Water Ambassador and protect our resources and our environment by taking a pledge
By-laws:
• It is illegal to water your garden between 09:00 and 18:00
• Make sure your hose is fitted with an automatic shut-off nozzle
• It’s illegal to hose-down your drive-way or any paved areas
