The Two Oceans Aquarium Trash Bash team is taking to Sunset Beach in Milnerton for their Earth Day beach cleanup this Saturday 19 April.
- The Trash Bash team have dedicated their April beach cleanup to amplifying the Earth Day message of celebrating our beautiful planet and its inhabitants. Earth Day 2025 is on Tuesday 22 April.
“Beach cleanups such as Trash Bash are the perfect Earth Day activity, bringing the community together to interrupt the cycle of pollution. With their nature as a collective community effort, Trash Bash has an enormous potential impact on environmental education and behaviour change. The ocean needs us, and we want to make a difference,” said Heather Wares, Two Oceans Aquarium Communications Manager.
Join the team this Saturday to build on the momentum of plastics collection, community building, and awareness through the Trash Bash Movement! Bring your family and friends to join the Cape Town Trash Bash community to make a difference in the health of our planet.
Look out for items such as plastic bags, bottles, straws, sweet wrappers, and even microplastics. These all contribute to the plastic problem in Cape Town.

An event to ring in Earth Day on 22 April 2025
Earth Day is an initiative started in 1970 to mobilise an environmental movement dedicated to conservation, environmentalism, and sustainability. Since the first Earth Day, over one billion individuals have been galvanised to act and make a change for Earth’s future.
The Two Oceans Aquarium is proud to dedicate the April Trash Bash to the mission of this successful global initiative to diversify, educate, and activate the environmental movement worldwide.
“Once a piece of plastic is produced, it becomes part of our environment forever – it cannot break down, biodegrade, or become part of the natural system again without human intervention. This is bad news for the marine life along our coastline. We all want to enjoy the ocean and its abundance for years to come, so let’s protect the ocean’s future (and ours) while we have the chance,” said Helen Lockhart, Conservation and Sustainability Manager at the Two Oceans Aquarium.
Not only do the Two Oceans Aquarium Trash Bashes look after the environment, but they also value the opportunity for community building and connection. “The Aquarium sees the invaluable importance of those who consider themselves part of the family and community. Spending time outside and with like-minded people creates a sense of responsibility for the environment and brings people together to care for areas within their communities,” said Lockhart.
As always, there will be plenty of fun and spot prizes to be had while cleaning up this stretch of our coast, and it’s always a pleasure meeting up with the growing ocean community at Sunset Beach.
