Meet Artist Lizo Qatase and Michael van der Walt
Lizo Qatase
Lizo is a young man who considers himself a people’s person. He enjoys meeting people and helping when ever he can. He says that being a Big Issue vendor awards him that opportunity to meet people from different backgrounds.
He recalls that in 2010 during the soccer world cup how he enjoyed meeting soccer players because he loves the sport. Lizo is eager to learn and as a result he has completed many courses including basic mechanic and computer skills. He participates in the art workshops because he enjoys it and is willing to learn. Other than working as a Big Issue vendor, he has worked in hotels as a housekeeper.
His painting is titled “Summer Days”
Michael van der Walt
Mike is a 66 year old Big Issue Vendor who lives in an old age home. He enjoys living an independent life, cooking for himself, doing his own laundry and making an income for himself. Mike works very hard to take care of himself because says he never wants to beg from anyone and has a good relationship with his customers. In the home, Mike lives together with his cat Mavis who he describes Mavis as his companion. Together with her they are called “MM” Mike and Mavis. He believes in having a positive mindset always, and moving forward never backwards. In his spare time Mike plays chess, goes to the beach and enjoys life in general. He also enjoys attending the art workshops.
His painting is titled “Sunlight on Cloth”

About the Big Issue Vendor Art Programme:
The Art sessions are part of The BIG ISSUE Vendor social development programme.
These take place once per month on the day when Vendors are introduced to the latest magazine and have other trainings and workshops. They all happen on the same day so that the Vendors only need to come into the office once.
The Sessions are open to anyone who is keen to participate, there is no judgment on ability or experience.
Each session offers a theme for the Vendors to explore often inspired from nature and reflection on inner qualities and relationships. The exercises are designed to warm, nurture and allow for free exploration. There are people who attend regularly and there is great joy when the pictures appear in the magazine or are sold. New vendors are encouraged to join in.
