In Recapture, photographer Jabulani Dhlamini documents the township of Sharpeville, ruminating on the its recovery and memorial in post-apartheid South Africa.
The decision to photograph it and its people came from his need to engage physically with a place that looms so large in South Africa’s past. In the three years it took to produce the Sharpeville series, Dhlamini’s interviews revealed how victims constructed informal memorials to the massacre.
