The Witzands Aquifer Nature Reserve was named the 2021 Reserve of the Year.
The City of Cape Town’s Biodiversity Management Branch recently hosted its annual recognition awards ceremony. Staff members from the various City managed reserves were recognised for the great efforts of the teams in managing these important natural assets of Cape Town. This reserve is going from strength to strength, all thanks to the dedicated staff component. The dunes are looking exquisite especially after lockdown and the demarcating of dune slack wetland areas. The Klein Dassenberg rehabilitation project which is also managed by this team is showing some good results.

The new.10th edition of the Cape Town Green Map is the ‘Cape Town Coastal Map’ which has an emphasis on our rich coastal assets. It explores the city’s 307km of coastline from the West Coast, around the Coastal Peninsula and beyond False Bay to Kogelberg in the East. The Coastal Map is a user-friendly guide, out in time for the summer season.
A brief description of each beach is provided along with interesting facts pertaining to the city’s coastal cultural and natural history.
With the combination of the warm Agulhas current that sweeps down from the east coast and the cold Benguela current from the west, Cape Town has an incredibly rich and varied marine flora and fauna. Through cultivating awareness and appreciation, as well as the encouragement of responsible beach and marine usage, the 2021 Coastal Map exemplifies the goals of the Green Maps Initiative. This new hardcopy map flags over 100 coastal sites including tidal pools, beaches, nature reserves, boat launch sites, City of Cape Town resorts, Marine Protected Areas, lighthouses, pertinent NGOs, information centres and NSRI stations.
